CASK interacting nucleosome assembly protein (CINAP) modulates gene expression and its abundance in cultured neurons is regulated by synaptic activity. CINAP is widely expressed in different regions of adult mouse brain, including the cerebral cortex, hippocampus, striatum, hypothalamus, cerebellum, and two adult brain regions known to generate progenitor neurons. During early development, CINAP is also expressed in regions where neuronal progenitor cells are actively dividing, the ventricular and subventricular zones, suggesting that in addition to regulating gene expression in mature neurons CINAP may also play a role in dividing cells.
Function:Part of the CASK/TRB1/TSPYL2 transcriptional complex which modulates gene expression in response to neuronal synaptic activity, probably by facilitating nucleosome assembly. May inhibit cell proliferation by inducing p53-dependent CDKN1A expression.
Subunit:Interacts with histones. Interacts with CASK. Part of a complex containing CASK, TRB1 and TSPYL2.
Subcellular Location:Nucleus. Cytoplasm. Note=Enriched in transcriptionally active regions of chromatin in neurons.
Tissue Specificity:Ubiquitously expressed, with highest levels in brain, testis and heart, and lowest levels in liver and pancreas.
Post-translational modifications:Phosphorylation at Ser-20 and/or Thr-340 impairs function on cell proliferation (Probable).
Similarity:Belongs to the nucleosome assembly protein (NAP) family.
